Blades grab win ahead of huge Burnley showdown
Sheffield United ensured Leeds United could not gain promotion to the Premier League early after beating Cardiff City 2-0 in the EFL Championship to maintain its ever-decreasing hopes of automatic promotion a little bit longer.
Gustavo Hamer opened the scoring with a low volley in the 33rd minute, while Ben Brereton Diaz made sure of the victory with three minutes remaining after clinically finishing while one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
Leeds returned to the top of the table with a victory over Oxford United later in the day, which would have been enough to guarantee a return to the top flight had the Blades coughed up a defeat.
But Chris Wilder's men proved they're not done fighting yet with a first win in four matches that moved them on to 86 points.
They remain third behind the top two, which also includes Burnley in second, level on 91 points with Leeds.
United has a chance to close to gap with a huge clash at Burnley on Tuesday (AEST), but that still might not be enough to avoid the lottery of the play-offs come the end of the season.
