West Brom sacks Mowbray after Derby defeat
West Bromwich Albion has sacked head coach Tony Mowbray just three months into his second spell with the club and is now looking for its seventh permanent manager in fewer than six years.
Mowbray was relieved of his duties after the Baggies were beaten 3-1 by relegation-threatened Derby County at The Hawthorns, with assistant Mark Venus also leaving his position.
It was West Brom's fifth defeat in six matches, which all but ended its play-off hopes for this season.
Mowbray, who guided the club to the Premier League in the 2007-2008 season during his first spell in charge, returned in February for a second stint after Carlos Corberan's departure to Valencia.
However, he oversaw only five wins from 18 league games, including one in the past nine, with the Baggies six points adrift of sixth-placed Coventry City and the last play-off position with two games remaining.
That ultimately cost the 61-year-old, with former midfielder James Morrison in temporary charge while the club searches again for a new boss.
"The club would like to place on record its thanks to Tony and Mark for their efforts – but has made the decision to part company following a series of poor results," a West Brom statement read.
"Tony and Mark will forever be welcome at the Hawthorns, and their contributions to the club winning the 2007-2008 Championship title will never be forgotten."
