Koeman Downplays Barcelona’s Chances of Winning the Champions League
Ronald Koeman, current head coach of the Netherlands national team and former manager of FC Barcelona, has questioned whether the Catalan side should be considered the top favorite to win the 2025 UEFA Champions League, despite their emphatic 4-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the quarter-finals.
“The Result Was Exaggerated”
Speaking during the Koeman Cup, a charity golf tournament supporting the Cruyff Foundation, the Dutchman acknowledged the team’s strong form but expressed reservations:
“PSG are also very strong, and the Arsenal I saw against Real Madrid can win the Champions League. Let’s not forget Dortmund had their chances too — the 4-0 was an exaggerated result.”
While Koeman praised Hansi Flick for restoring competitiveness and harmony within the team, he stopped short of placing Barcelona ahead of other European giants.
Praise for Flick and Barça’s Midfield Core
Koeman highlighted the strength of Barcelona’s midfield, particularly noting the contributions of Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, Fermín López, and Gavi.
“The coach is doing a great job. The squad has balance and a good atmosphere. The midfield is the heart of the team. They all have quality and there are plenty of options.”
Regarding De Jong, one of his most trusted players, Koeman remarked:
“He’s back at his best. I hope he stays at Barça for many years, but that will depend on the club.”
On Lamine Yamal, the 17-year-old sensation, Koeman was cautiously optimistic:
“He’s decisive for his age, but I don’t think he’ll reach Messi’s level of importance.”
Thoughts on Real Madrid’s Struggles
Koeman also weighed in on Real Madrid’s 3-0 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates:
“Arsenal were superior with and without the ball. But the tie isn’t over. If there’s one team capable of turning things around, it’s Real Madrid.”
