Martino Defends Inter Miami's Club World Cup Invitation
Gerardo "Tata" Martino, coach of Inter Miami, stated on Thursday that the team’s invitation to the 2025 Club World Cup was awarded based on "sporting merit." On the eve of the MLS Cup playoff match against Atlanta United, Martino said, “We’re at ease knowing the merit lies on the sporting side.”
FIFA announced last week that Inter Miami would take the host nation's spot, allocated to the United States. This decision followed a regular season where Inter Miami secured the Supporters' Shield with a record 74 points. However, Martino acknowledged, “One could argue whether it would have been better to wait and give it to the league champion.”
Defender Jordi Alba also commented on the team’s participation: “Facing teams like that is important. We, the former Barcelona players, have done it before, but most of the squad hasn’t had the chance.” Alba emphasized that while it will be challenging, it’s a major achievement for the club.
FIFA chose Inter Miami after an outstanding season where Lionel Messi scored 20 goals and provided 16 assists in just 19 matches, while Luis Suárez netted 20 goals. Both players were instrumental in the team’s success.
The 2025 Club World Cup will take place from June 15 to July 13, featuring 32 teams from five continents and 63 matches across 12 venues. The final spot will go to the winner of the 2024 Copa Libertadores.
