Infantino Confirms Messi Will Play in the World Cup
FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced that Lionel Messi's Inter Miami will participate in the 2025 Club World Cup. Infantino made the announcement after the team's impressive 6-2 victory over the New England Revolution, highlighting that their "amazing performance" this year deserved this invitation.
Inter Miami will play the tournament's opening match at Hard Rock Stadium in Florida. The selection is based on their exceptional performance, with Messi contributing 20 goals and 16 assists in just 19 matches, while Uruguayan forward Luis Suárez also excelled with another 20 goals.
FIFA chose the team as the representative for the United States, which is the host country for the tournament. Only the last team, the 2024 Copa Libertadores champion, remains to be determined.
The new FIFA Club World Cup will take place from June 15 to July 13, 2025, featuring 32 teams from around the world and a total of 63 matches across 12 different venues.
