Vinicius Jr and Real Madrid Won’t Attend the Ballon d’Or Ceremony
While there were internal discussions about whether Emilio Butragueño, Real Madrid’s director of institutional relations, should attend the event, it was ultimately decided that he would also not make the trip.
Neither Vinícius Junior nor Real Madrid's other award candidates will be present at the Ballon d'Or ceremony this Monday, according to information from EFE, Fabrizio Romano, and Marca, after learning that the Brazilian will not be recognized as the best player of last season.
The delegation from Real Madrid, which had planned to travel to Paris early in the afternoon, canceled their flight upon receiving this information.
With 24 goals and 11 assists in 39 matches, including a double in the Champions League—where he scored in the final—and La Liga, Vinícius was seen as the main candidate to win the award for best player. However, according to the club, he will not receive the honor.
According to information provided by the club to EFE, Real Madrid considers it disrespectful that the award criteria do not recognize Vinícius or Dani Carvajal as winners, which is why the team will not attend the ceremony in Paris.
This situation leaves Spaniard Rodrigo Hernández, from Manchester City, as the main favorite to win the Ballon d’Or, an award that will be announced during the gala starting this Monday at 1:45 p.m. Mexico City time.
Besides Vinícius and Carvajal, four other Real Madrid players were Ballon d'Or candidates: Jude Bellingham, Fede Valverde, Antonio Rüdiger, and Toni Kroos, who will retire after Euro 2024.
Additionally, Real Madrid also has a representative in the Kopa Trophy, which honors the best young player of last season, with Arda Güler, though Lamine Yamal is the favorite in this category.
Andriy Lunin is also in the running for best goalkeeper, while Carlo Ancelotti could be named best manager, and Real Madrid itself is a candidate for the "Best Male Club of the Year" award.
However, according to the aforementioned media outlets, none of them will attend the Ballon d’Or gala after confirming that Vinícius will not be awarded this recognition.
