Revelations in the Balón d'Or Race: Rodri Narrowly Wins Over Vinicius
The recent Balón d'Or voting results reveal a narrow victory for Rodri over Vinicius, with just 41 points separating the two, as disclosed by France Football and L'Equipe this Friday. Spanish midfielder Rodri from Manchester City garnered 1,170 points while Brazilian forward Vinicius from Real Madrid secured 1,129 points, marking the closest result since Leo Messi's victory over Virgil van Dijk in 2019.
In percentage terms, Rodri achieved 17.6% of the votes compared to 17% for Vinicius. The 2024 Balón d'Or was awarded at a ceremony held in Paris on October 28th.
Of the 99 jury members, fifteen did not place either Rodri or Vinicius at the top of their list, showing a distinct preference for other Real Madrid players. Jude Bellingham was favored five times, Dani Carvajal four times, and Toni Kroos twice in the top spot. Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, Lautaro Martinez, and Ademola Lookman each received one top spot mention.
Additionally, only five jury members omitted Rodri from their top ten picks, while Vinicius was overlooked by three. Interestingly, no jury member matched the exact 'top 10' of this year, and only seven aligned with the top four: Rodri, Vinicius, Bellingham, and Carvajal.
