Simone Biles Misses the Podium on Balance Beam After a Fall
The Olympic gymnastics superstar allowed herself to be vulnerable and fell during the balance beam final, finishing fifth and off the podium.
Simone Biles also fell. The gymnastics superstar allowed herself to be vulnerable and went down in the balance beam final, joining three other finalists in hitting the floor. She ended up fifth, off the podium.
The uneven bars was Biles' penultimate final in Paris, with the floor exercise scheduled to conclude the competition on the same day.
Biles was performing a routine that seemed destined for the podium—D'Amato’s precision had made gold very challenging—when she lost her grip on the bar after a backward acrobatic move and fell. The judges deliberated over her score, ultimately giving her a 13.100, which placed her outside the medal positions, even after Andrade's performance surpassed hers.
The uneven bars brought an Olympic glory previously unknown to Italian gymnastics, with gold and bronze medals awarded to Alice D'Amato (14.366) and Manila Esposito (14.000), separated by China's Yaqin Zhou (14.100).
Following a silver in the team event, Italy reaffirms its status as a leading country in women's gymnastics, trailing only behind the United States. Italian gymnasts had not previously won any medals on the bars.
Fourth place went to Brazilian Rebeca Andrade (13.933), with a score lower than what her routine deserved.
Simone Biles has won three golds in Paris (team, individual, and vault). She has never won an Olympic gold on the bars, though she has two bronze medals from the previous two Games.
