Osmar Olvera Gives Mexico a New Medal in Diving
The Mexican athlete won the bronze medal in the 3-meter springboard final at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Mexican diver Osmar Olvera, who previously won silver in synchronized diving, earned his second medal at the Paris Olympics by clinching bronze in the men’s 3-meter springboard final on Thursday.
Olvera scored a total of 500.40 points, finishing 43.20 points behind China’s Siyi Xie, who defended his Olympic title from Tokyo three years ago with a score of 543.60.
The podium was completed by another Chinese diver, Zongyuan Wang, who secured the same silver medal he won in Tokyo, scoring 530.20 points.
The young Mexican diver, who turned 20 last June, appeared poised to take silver when he was in second place after the second round of dives, sandwiched between the two Chinese competitors.
However, a slight misstep in his third dive, a backward 3.5 somersault, was scored 63.00 points, the lowest of his final, allowing the two Chinese divers to regain the lead.
This setback tested Olvera’s mental fortitude, but he responded with an outstanding dive that placed him back in contention behind Xie and Wang, who were locked in a fierce battle for gold.
Yet, Olvera saved his best for last, finishing the final with two impressive dives that suggest he could challenge the Chinese divers for the top spot in the near future.
In his fourth attempt, Olvera nearly achieved perfection with an extraordinary dive scored 98.80 points. In his sixth and final dive, he surpassed ninety points again with a score of 93.60.
These scores not only secured Olvera’s third consecutive podium finish in major competitions, following his silver at the 2023 Fukuoka World Championships and bronze in February, but also position him as the diver most likely to challenge Chinese dominance in the future.
