Morocco Makes History with 0-6 Win Over Egypt, Claims First Olympic Bronze Medal
Ez Abde of Real Betis and Soufiane Rahimi of Al-Ain played key roles in Morocco's historic victory, securing the country's first-ever Olympic bronze medal in the football tournament with a 0-6 thrashing of Egypt.
Morocco showcased their dominance by eliminating Egypt's chances, repeating the outcome of the final of the last U-23 African Championship, also won by the Atlas Lions.
Ez Abde was pivotal from the start, scoring a stunning goal in the 23rd minute with a precise shot from the area, and then assisting Soufiane Rahimi three minutes later. Rahimi, the Al-Ain forward, made history by scoring his seventh goal in six consecutive Olympic matches, becoming the first player to achieve this feat.
Rahimi had the chance to extend his tally but had to wait until the second half. In the 51st minute, Bilal El Khannouss, who missed the semifinal against Spain due to suspension, scored the 0-3 with a shot close to the post after a brilliant run.
In the 64th minute, Rahimi scored his eighth goal of the tournament, equaling the record for goals in a U-23 competition set by Argentine Carlos Tévez in Athens 2004. Additionally, he assisted on Morocco's fifth goal with a pass to Akram Nakach, who scored into an empty net in the 73rd minute.
With the match already decided, Achraf Hakimi capped off the scoring with one of the goals of the tournament. In the 86th minute, he executed a spectacular free kick that hit the top corner, making it 0-6 and setting a record for the largest margin of victory in the men's football competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
