LeBron James' Reaction to Luka Doncic Signing: "I’m Happy, But..."
Luka Doncic's move to the Los Angeles Lakers caught everyone off guard—even LeBron James! He thought it was a joke!
LeBron James, now with Luka Doncic officially introduced as his new teammate at the Los Angeles Lakers, expressed his happiness on Tuesday about playing alongside the Slovenian star. However, he admitted that everything surrounding this historic and shocking trade has been hard to believe.
"It's going to be special (the Lakers with Doncic and me), I truly believe that. We're going to draw a lot of attention. Of course, there's our ability to score, rebound, and pass. That will make things easier for our teammates, and that's what we want to do—create opportunities for them. It's our job to lead every night," he told TNT after the Lakers' dominant win over the Clippers (97-122).
"Look, Luka is a top-tier player, just 25 years old, who hasn't even reached his prime yet and has already done incredible things in this league. I'm happy to have him, Los Angeles is happy to have him, but honestly, it still feels a bit surreal," he added.
LeBron also described the past few days as a "whirlwind" due to the trade that sent Doncic to the Lakers and Anthony Davis to the Mavericks.
"I can't even imagine how it's been for Luka, AD, Max Christie, Maxi Kleber, Jalen Hood-Schifino... It’s been tough, of course. Especially for me—I've been with AD for six years, won a championship with him, and he's obviously one of my best friends. But it's a business, and you understand that. I know he’ll do great in Dallas," he said about Davis.
After his spectacular triple-double at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, LeBron once again delivered an outstanding performance for a 40-year-old, finishing with 26 points (8-of-13 shooting), 8 rebounds, and 9 assists against the Clippers.
Doncic, in the final stages of recovering from his calf injury, sat on the Lakers’ bench for the first time and was seen smiling as he enjoyed LeBron and company dismantling the Clippers.
Austin Reaves (20 points, 6 rebounds, and 9 assists) and Rui Hachimura (20 points and 6 rebounds) contributed to a well-rounded Lakers offense, which shot an impressive 18-of-37 from three (48.6%).
The Lakers (29-19) are on a hot streak, winning nine of their last eleven games. They dominated the Clippers with a 29-45 first quarter, led 50-73 at halftime, and extended their lead to +31 in the fourth quarter.
The Lakers will host Stephen Curry’s Golden State Warriors on Thursday, but Doncic's expected debut is set for the following game, also at home, on Saturday against the Indiana Pacers.
