Jannik Sinner's Drama with Doping Allegations
Jannik Sinner tested positive for a banned substance during a routine doping control at Indian Wells last April. However, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) declared him innocent after determining that the positive result was due to an error by his physiotherapist, who used a product containing clostebol, a prohibited substance.
Sinner, who is currently ranked as the world number one, acknowledged the situation in a press release, stating that he would accept the loss of ranking points from the Indian Wells tournament, where the control took place. The tournament ran from March 3 to 17, 2024, and it was during this period that Sinner underwent the test that later returned a positive result in April.
The ITIA launched an investigation and concluded that the ingestion of clostebol, which can enhance athletic performance, was unintentional. According to Sinner's team, the substance was present in "less than one-billionth of a gram" and entered his system through a treatment administered by his physiotherapist, who had purchased an over-the-counter product from an Italian pharmacy to treat a cut on Sinner's finger.
Sinner expressed relief at the outcome and stated his intention to move on from this challenging and unfortunate period. He also affirmed his commitment to continuing to comply with the ITIA's anti-doping program. As a result, Sinner will be eligible to compete in the upcoming US Open at the end of August.
