What Does PSG Need to Qualify for the Champions League Quarterfinals?
Paris Saint-Germain faces a tough challenge after losing 0-1 to Liverpool in the first leg of the 2024-2025 Champions League Round of 16. Despite dominating possession and creating several goal-scoring opportunities, Luis Enrique's team couldn't convert, and a late goal from Harvey Elliott in the 87th minute, coupled with an excellent performance from Alisson, left PSG with slim chances for the return leg. To progress to the quarterfinals, PSG needs to win by at least two goals at Anfield—a difficult task, but not impossible.
Luis Enrique's Confidence
Luis Enrique didn't hide his frustration, calling the defeat "very unfair." The Spanish coach emphasized that his team was superior for most of the game, especially in the first half, and remained confident that they could overturn the deficit. "At Liverpool, we have nothing to lose. We’ll go out there to do the same as we did here, knowing they’ll be more aggressive," he said in the press conference. Despite the loss, the coach praised PSG’s collective performance and the value of his team.
Arne Slot's Analysis
On the other hand, Arne Slot, Liverpool's manager, acknowledged PSG's superiority, especially in the first 45 minutes, but pointed out that the victory gives them a significant advantage going into the second leg. "We’d have been lucky with a draw," said Slot, who also praised Alisson’s performance. The Dutch coach admitted that PSG has exceptional quality and did not underestimate the difficulty of defending their advantage at Anfield, where they expect strong support from their fans.
The Challenge for PSG
With an impressive unbeaten streak coming into the first leg, PSG will need to rely on their attacking strength and confidence in their system of play to mount a comeback at Anfield. Though it’s a difficult task, the team's recent history shows they can overcome obstacles in the Champions League, as they did last year against Barcelona. The tie is still open, and everything will be decided in the 90 minutes remaining at the iconic English stadium.
