Luis Enrique and the Atlético de Madrid Offer: "Good Thing They Chose Simeone"
Luis Enrique had high praise for his rival this Wednesday, whom he considered 'top' for having led a major club for so many years.
Paris Saint-Germain's head coach, Luis Enrique, acknowledged that he had an offer to coach Atlético de Madrid, which he turned down because "he had given his word to another club." He added that Atlético was fortunate because he wouldn’t have lasted as long.
"Yes, it's true (that I had an offer from Atlético de Madrid), but I had already made a decision, given my word to another club, and I wasn’t going to break it," said the Spanish coach in the press conference ahead of tomorrow's Champions League match against the 'colchoneros.'
"Atlético was lucky to find Simeone; I wouldn’t have lasted even half a year, I don't have that energy. They found the best coach they could have, as proven by his record and the titles he’s won in eleven seasons," he added.
"I’ll be seeing Mr. Simeone again. I faced him as a player, and many times as a coach. I admire it greatly when a coach stays at a big club for so many years, with the difficulty that entails in finding the energy and keeping players motivated," he said.
The Spanish coach has faced the Argentine coach 14 times, with nine wins, two draws, and three losses.
Luis Enrique highlighted Simeone’s motivational abilities and expressed his confidence that at the Parc des Princes, "they’ll bring their best version: competitive, strong, and serious."
"They have many international players used to high-level matches; I have no doubt they will compete," said the PSG coach, adding that the result "is very important but not decisive" for qualification.
"If the loser wins the next four games, they’ll qualify; so it’s not a decisive match," commented Luis Enrique, who also said he approaches the clash "with optimism" and with the goal of "taking all three points."
The coach dismissed the notion that his team is losing momentum in Europe, despite recent setbacks, with a loss to Arsenal and a draw against PSV Eindhoven.
"I would sign up to get the same numbers as against PSV," stated Luis Enrique, who added that his plan is "to create as many scoring chances as possible."
He also acknowledged they’re working on improving scoring efficiency but refused to "put on a show" by talking about signings: "I have no doubt that we’ll be one of the top-scoring teams. But buying a player who guarantees goals doesn’t work; that doesn’t exist. We’re working to solve it as a team, putting in the player who’s most accurate at the moment."
