Szczesny Announces Retirement from Football After Not Renewing with Juventus
Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who played for teams like Juventus, Arsenal, and Roma, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34.
Szczesny parted ways with Juventus just two weeks ago, after spending seven seasons with the club—longer than with any other team. They reached an agreement to mutually terminate his contract, which was originally set to expire in June 2025.
He joined Arsenal in 2006 from Legia Warsaw and spent five seasons there before moving to Roma, where he played for two seasons before landing with the Turin giants.
"I left Warsaw, my hometown, in June 2006 to join Arsenal with a dream: to make a living from football. I had no idea it would be the start of the adventure of my life. I didn’t know I would end up playing for some of the biggest clubs in the world and representing my national team 84 times," he wrote in a statement on his social media.
"Dreams do come true. I went places I never imagined. I played at the highest level, against some of the best players in history, and never felt out of my depth. I made lifelong friends, created unforgettable memories, and met incredible people," he added.
"But I also gave everything I had. I dedicated 18 years of my life to the game, day in and day out, with no excuses. Today, my body still feels ready for the challenges, but my heart isn’t in it anymore. I feel like it’s time to focus all my attention on my family. That’s why I’ve decided to retire from professional football," he explained.
Throughout his career, Szczesny won 2 FA Cups and a Community Shield with Arsenal, and 3 Scudetti, 3 Coppa Italia titles, and 2 Italian Super Cups with Juventus. He was also named Serie A's best goalkeeper in 2020, won the Premier League Golden Glove in 2014, and was Poland's Footballer of the Year in 2022.
