Manchester United 3-2 Ipswich Town: Maguire earns much-needed victory
Manchester United earned their first home win since January after holding out against Ipswich Town to earn all three points on Wednesday.
Harry Maguire secured 10-man Manchester United a first Premier League win since January, edging Ipswich Town 3-2 at Old Trafford.
Jaden Philogene had given Ipswich a fourth-minute lead after a mix-up at the back. Patrick Dorgu kicked the ball past Andre Onana, who had rushed off his line, leaving the winger with the easiest of tap-ins at an empty net.
However, United staged a first-half comeback, with two goals in four minutes flipping the script. Sam Morsy's own goal restored parity before Matthijs de Ligt rifled the rebound from Alex Palmer's double save into the roof of the net.
Dorgu was then shown a red card by the referee following a VAR review for a late challenge on Omari Hutchinson in the 43rd minute, before Philogene's second, a teasing cross that snuck past Onana, pulled Ipswich level.
But it was Maguire who had the final say, with his thumping header from a corner sealing a much-needed win for Ruben Amorim's side on Wednesday as Ipswich struggled to find a way back in.
United moved up to 14th on 33 points, but Ipswich, who are yet to win a league game in 2025, remain third-bottom and five points behind Wolves.
Data Debrief: United end Old Trafford rot
United fans will have been fearing the worst after conceding so early, but they managed to turn things around to earn their first Premier League win at Old Trafford since mid-January.
They have now won 110 Premier League matches after conceding the first goal, the most of any side in Premier League history.
It was the 12th time since Amorim's first game in charge on November 24 that they have conceded the opening goal, with no team doing so more in that period.
Fernandes, who orchestrated their comeback against Everton on Saturday, played his part once more. In fact, since his debut in February 2020, only Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne have more Premier League assists than him (48).
In the last three seasons, there have been three instances of a player scoring twice in the first half of a Premier League game at Old Trafford. None have been for United: Pascal Gross for Brighton (August 2022), Luis Díaz for Liverpool (September 2024) and Philogene for Ipswich, though he was unable to springboard them to a much-needed result.
