Manchester City 4-0 Newcastle United: Rapid Marmoush hat-trick inspires rout
Newcastle United were no match for Manchester City, as Omar Marmoush's hat-trick propelled Pep Guardiola's side to a 4-0 win on Saturday.
Omar Marmoush plundered a stunning first-half hat-trick as Manchester City thumped Newcastle United 4-0 in the Premier League.
Marmoush, a big-money signing from Eintracht Frankfurt in January, opened his City account in sensational style, scoring three times in the space of 14 minutes at the Etihad Stadium.
City lost 5-1 to Arsenal in their last top-flight outing and came into Saturday's clash on the back of a dramatic Champions League defeat to Real Madrid, but Pep Guardiola's team returned to form in emphatic fashion.
Marmoush opened the floodgates in the 19th minute when he lobbed Martin Dubravka after latching onto Ederson's superb pass – the Brazilian now has the outright most assists of any goalkeeper in Premier League history (six), while he has also become the first shot-stopper to provide three assists in a single campaign.
The Egyptian doubled up when he drilled in via a deflection off Kieran Trippier five minutes later, before rounding out his hat-trick with a composed, first-time finish from Savinho's cutback.
Lewis Milley had Newcastle's best attempt of a low-key second half, before James McAtee rounded off City's rout when he hooked in from a corner in the 84th minute.
Erling Haaland went down clutching his knee late on to cause some stress for Guardiola, though the striker appeared to be okay as he made his way to the bench.
City face Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League play-off on Wednesday, before taking on Liverpool in a blockbuster Premier League clash next weekend.
Data Debrief: Marmoush makes his mark
Marmoush led the Bundesliga for goal contributions (24 – 15 goals, 19 assists) this season prior to his switch to City, and he displayed that level of performance in a quite sensational first half.
Not only did Marmoush become the second player whose first three Premier League goals for City came as a hat-trick, after Paulo Wanchope against Sunderland in August 2000, but his hat-trick was the fourth-fastest – in terms of time between the first and third goals – one of the club's players has scored in the competition.
With just 33 minutes on the clock when Marmoush netted his third goal, it is the second-earliest a City player has netted a Premier League hat-trick, after Kevin De Bruyne against Wolves in May 2022 (24th minute).
Newcastle have now lost their last 16 Premier League away games at City, and suffered their biggest top-flight defeat since May 2022, when they lost 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
