Mikel Arteta Expresses Doubt Over Use of Blue Cards in Football
Spanish coach Mikel Arteta, manager of Arsenal, expressed doubt about the introduction of blue cards in the near future in football, stating that he doesn't know if "we are ready for that yet."
These new cards will lead to a ten-minute expulsion for players committing tactical fouls or protesting referee decisions. This new protocol will limit blue cards to fouls that disrupt "promising attacks" or player protests. Additionally, a player will be sent off from the match if they receive two blue cards, or a combination of one blue and one yellow (and vice versa).
"I don't know if we are ready for this. We already have a lot going on with decisions, with technology... I don't know if we are ready for that yet. I hope they test it thoroughly before introducing it at this level," Arteta said in a press conference on Friday.
Arteta's sentiment echoes that of Chelsea's Mauricio Pochettino, who noted that it is "not a good idea," and Liverpool's Jürgen Klopp, who stated that it is not a "fantastic idea" and that the International Board (IFAB) rarely has a good idea.
Pep Guardiola has remained neutral, stating that he won't give his opinion until it is official.
This measure will mark the first introduction of a new disciplinary card since the arrival of yellow and red cards in the 1970 World Cup.
