Arsenal Fans Dedicate a Mural to... Their Set-Piece Coach?!
Arsenal fans have paid tribute to Frenchman Nicolas Jover, the team’s set-piece coach, with a mural near the Emirates Stadium. This recognition comes after the Gunners' outstanding performance in dead-ball situations.
Jover's impact on set pieces
Last season, Mikel Arteta’s squad scored 22 goals from set pieces in the Premier League, including 16 from corners—a record in the competition’s history. Since Jover's arrival in July 2021, Arsenal has climbed from 18th to 1st in set-piece goals, doubling their effectiveness in this area from 11% to 22%.
The mural dedicated to Jover joins others honoring figures like Leah Williamson, captain of the women’s team, and Martin Odegaard, captain of the men’s team. During the recent win against Monaco, fans chanted, "Set-piece, olé, olé," highlighting the impact of the French coach's work.
Among the biggest beneficiaries is Bukayo Saka, who already has 10 assists this season and is chasing the record of 20, held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Jover also left his mark at Manchester City, where from 2019 to 2021, he reduced goals conceded from set pieces from 39% to 16% and turned the team into the best set-piece scorers in a single season. At Arsenal, his influence is clear: the team has scored 48 set-piece goals since his arrival, averaging one goal every 16.4 corners—significantly improving the previous rate of one goal every 32 corners.
