New England Revolution v New York City FC: Polster hails team effort in turning form around
New England Revolution are looking to make it back-to-back MLS wins when they welcome New York City FC to Gillette Stadium on Saturday.
New England Revolution's Matt Polster says the team's unity has led to a turn in form as they look to earn a second consecutive MLS win against New York City FC.
The Revs earned their second league win of the season in their 1-0 victory over Atlanta United last weekend, meaning they have won two of their last three outings.
They had failed to win any of their first four games this season and currently sit 12th in the Eastern Conference after seven games with seven points.
And Polster believes that by sharing the load among the players, New England have found a formula that can breed success.
"It's very important as a group that it's not just on one or two guys," Polster said, as quoted in the Blazing Musket substack.
"It's a team leading each other, and that's what we did [against Atlanta]. I thought we were really good, and I think everybody was engaged, and that was the biggest difference from maybe the start of the season.
"I think maybe we weren't as engaged [as we are] now, everybody is on the same page and pushing for wins."
NYCFC, meanwhile, sit two places above New England in the table, and are four points better off, having played a game more.
After beating the Revs 2-1 in mid-March, NYCFC went on a three-match winless streak before stopping the rot against the Philadelphia Union last time out by winning 1-0.
It was just NYCFC's third win of the season, and head coach Pascal Jansen admitted it was a big one given their struggles in the games beforehand.
"[It was] very important [to win against Philadelphia]," said Jansen. "I told the boys — that is the response I expected going into the Minnesota game.
"We were switched on from the start, ready for a fight… Philly is a tough side to play, but the guys handled themselves quite well."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
New England Revolution – Carles Gil
Carles Gil has scored New England's last three goals, including the last two from the penalty spot.
In fact, Gil is the only Revs player to score a goal this season, as the club's only other goal was an own goal scored by NYCFC's Thiago Martins in March.
New York City FC – Alonso Martinez
Alonso Martinez has scored 13 goals in 16 regular-season games dating back to last August, including netting the lone goal in NYCFC's win on Saturday.
Martinez is the top scorer in regular-season MLS play since the league returned from the Leagues Cup break last August.
MATCH PREDICTION: NEW YORK CITY FC WIN
NYCFC are unbeaten in six straight meetings in all competitions with New England (W3 D3, including a penalty shootout win in the Leagues Cup). This is the longest unbeaten run by either team in the history of the series (29 matches).
However, New York City have won only one of their last 19 away matches in all competitions (D9 L9) dating back to June, with that win coming against the New York Red Bulls. NYCFC's last win outside of the New York area was a 1-0 victory at the Revolution in May 2024.
Meanwhile, New England have won two of their last three matches (L1) after winning just one of their previous 14 games dating back to the end of last season. The Revs' only set of consecutive wins since the start of last season was a four-match winning run last June.
