Sergio Rico Explains How Football Saved His Life
The PSG goalkeeper, who was in a coma for 26 days and is recovering to return to the field, said that if it weren't for football, he would be dead. These were his words.
Sergio Rico, PSG goalkeeper, suffered a serious accident while horseback riding last May, which caused him a traumatic brain injury and left him in a coma for 26 days. Since then, he has been recovering to return to the pitch with the Parisian club.
In an interview with Canal+ Foot, the Seville-born goalkeeper explained that if it weren't for football, he might not be here today. He recounted that one of the doctors who treated him said that if he hadn't been an elite athlete, his body wouldn't have been able to withstand the accident he experienced.
"I relate everything to football; football is my life. The doctor said so too, that in the end, one of my arteries was a little thicker or larger than that of a person who didn't do as much sport. I feel very fortunate to still be alive because it was very serious, and life was at stake," Rico affirmed.
For the goalkeeper, the best news of all was when he was told he could play football again: "He said yes (I could play again). From that moment on, I felt relieved. I almost jumped out of the hospital bed. Life is very important. No one wants to die, but if I had to stop playing football, it wouldn't have been worth it," the goalkeeper added.
Sergio Rico's recovery is a long one, but the goalkeeper has expressed confidence in being back with PSG before the end of this season. For now, he continues to recover with some limitations: "The doctors said there was a risk regarding balance, but it's perfect. It's almost a miracle that I'm so well. I must not exceed 130 beats per minute. Everything I can do without exceeding this limit, I do," he added.
