Marquinhos Ties the Record for Most Appearances with PSG
Brazilian defender Marquinhos, who came on in the 67th minute replacing Martin Skriniar this Saturday in the league match against Clermont, became the player with the most appearances for Paris Saint-Germain, equaling the record set by defender Jean-Marc Pilorget between 1975 and 1989.
Marquinhos wore the PSG jersey for the 435th time, matching Pilorget's record, a feat he could surpass next Wednesday if coach Luis Enrique fields him in the Champions League quarterfinal first leg against Barcelona at the Parc des Princes.
The PSG captain, who joined the club in July 2013 at just 19 years old under the Qatari owners, has climbed the ranks within the club to become one of the most respected and beloved figures in the team.
It's likely Marquinhos will raise this record even higher as he extended his contract with PSG until 2028 last May.
The player has already made a significant impact at the club, arriving from Roma as a young talent highly sought after by top European clubs for his potential.
Initially under the shadow of fellow Brazilian Thiago Silva, Marquinhos inherited the captain's armband when the former Milan player left for Chelsea after eight seasons at Parc des Princes.
PSG fans have discovered a solid leader in Marquinhos, appreciating his commitment to the club through both good times and tough moments, especially in European competitions.
Having recently played his 286th league game, more than any other Parisian in this century, Marquinhos has achieved an impressive record in the French capital.
His accolades include eight French league titles, five French Cups, three League Cups, seven Super Cups, and a Champions League final appearance, alongside the 2019 Copa America and 2016 Olympic gold with Brazil, where he has played 84 matches and scored seven goals.
The importance of the player at the club was highlighted this Friday by coach Luis Enrique, who called him "a role model on and off the field."
"He's someone who commits as if he were a young player. When I see his face, I see someone eager, with a desire to improve. He's understood that, despite his experience, there's something to learn every day, even from the youngest players," he noted.
