Who Is Álex Padilla, the Goalkeeper Exciting Mexico Who Hails From Chihuahua?
In today's globalized world, it's increasingly common to see players with multiple nationalities faced with choosing which country to represent. Such is the case of Álex Padilla, who has sparked excitement in Mexico despite being born in Zarauz, Spain.
Why Is the Athletic Club Goalkeeper Considered Mexican?
The 20-year-old goalkeeper was born in the Basque Country but has Mexican roots, specifically from Chihuahua. His mother, Armida Pérez Talamantes, is Mexican, originally from Ciudad Camargo, while his father, Iñaki Padilla, is of Basque origin.
Although he debuted with Spain's U-19 national team in 2021 against Mexico in a friendly, it was in 2024 that he decided to accept an offer from El Tri to play for their U-23 team, debuting against Argentina on March 22.
On May 31, he was part of the senior national team squad that played against Bolivia, serving as a substitute. Ten days later, he played his second match with the U-23 team, this time against Ivory Coast.
Why Did He Start in La Liga?
Unfortunately, Athletic Club lost their two main goalkeepers, Unai Simón and Julen Agirrezabala, to injury, which allowed the young Spanish-Mexican to start. Ernesto Valverde gave him full confidence, and he rose to the occasion.
After his impressive performance against Getafe in the opening match of the Spanish league, the goalkeeper received praise from both the press and fans, becoming a key player in securing a draw for his team.
His Next Match Could Be Against Barcelona
Álex Padilla could start again, this time aiming to stop the attacks of one of the world's most important clubs, FC Barcelona. In this match, he would face attackers like Robert Lewandowski, Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Ferran Torres, and Fermín.
