Thibaut Courtois Suffers Another Serious Knee Injury
The Real Madrid goalkeeper, who was in the final stages of recovering from his serious knee injury, suffered another significant setback.
Real Madrid's Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who was in the final stages of recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee suffered last August 10th, has torn the internal meniscus in his right knee during training.
Courtois left Real Madrid's training session on Tuesday in tears, and subsequent tests confirmed a new knee injury.
"After tests conducted today on our player Thibaut Courtois, he has been diagnosed with a tear of the internal meniscus in his right knee. The injury occurred during today's training session. Pending further evaluation," reads the statement from the white club.
The Belgian goalkeeper started the training session alongside the Madrid players from the first team who have not been called up by their national teams, in a session with Castilla, and during a goalkeeping action, he felt a crunch in his healthy knee.
Having been out for seven months, Thibaut was in the final stretch of his recovery, just days away from being declared fit to play.
In recent weeks, since late February, he had been alternating sessions with the group with individualized work, and even his coach, the Italian Carlo Ancelotti, had marked the return of club competition after the break for international matches as the moment to count on his player again.
Initially, April 13th, in the visit to Mallorca, was pointed out as the date for Courtois' return, and given his good progress, Ancelotti did not rule out the possibility of him being called up for the match on March 31st, against Athletic Club at the Santiago Bernabéu, before the European clash against Manchester City.
After learning the extent of Courtois' new injury, Real Madrid's medical staff are considering the appropriate treatment to heal the Belgian goalkeeper's ruptured internal meniscus in his right knee, sources from the club informed EFE.
Depending on the decision they make with the goalkeeper, whether he needs surgery or a conservative treatment is chosen, a new recovery time will be set, but it is very difficult for him to reappear before the end of the season.
Courtois has already announced that he will not participate in the European Championship with Belgium, so he may be sidelined from the field of play for over a year.
