Szczesny Earns the Chance to Stay at Barcelona... But Does He Want to Renew?
At Barcelona, they are convinced of offering Szczesny a new contract despite the fact that Ter-Stegen is set to return next season
Szczesny’s latest performance against Benfica in the Champions League, where he made eight saves that were only overshadowed by Alisson’s display against PSG, has convinced Barcelona to offer him a contract renewal. However, it’s not so clear whether the Polish goalkeeper is willing to stay.

Szczesny’s great level at Barcelona
Szczesny’s early days at Barcelona now seem far in the past. But it’s important to remember they weren’t easy at all. The club turned to him as an emergency solution after Ter-Stegen’s serious injury, and after announcing his retirement, he decided to put his gloves back on. However, Iñaki Peña was Flick’s first choice, and he didn’t make his debut until January 2025.
During this time, he was a substitute in 14 matches. However, he was patient and waited for his opportunity, which came in the Spanish Supercup, where Barcelona ended up winning the final against Real Madrid... because Iñaki Peña arrived late to the concentration. Since then, he hasn’t left Flick’s plans and has kept a clean sheet in eight occasions.
Szczesny isn’t focused on renewing
“If they had asked me at the beginning of the season, I would have said I would leave Barcelona in June. But I love the time I’ve spent here. I’m open to everything,” Szczesny recently confessed. These are revealing statements regarding his future plans... even though he will have to fight for the starting spot again with Ter-Stegen.
However, it seems he doesn’t want to make things easy for Barcelona and wants to prove his worth after his recent performances: “Will a new contract be signed in the summer? I’m not worried about that right now. My focus is on the matches. I want to give my best, and then we’ll see what happens in the future.”
