Handball Controversy: Vinícius Jr. Stirs Debate After Real Madrid's Epic Comeback
After the controversy surrounding the epic comeback of Real Madrid against Almería, the Brazilian decided to contribute his version to the debate, and he did it in his own way.
Real Madrid staged a comeback this Sunday in a match that seemed lost at halftime (0-2) against Almería at the Santiago Bernabéu. The turnaround was, in part, thanks to one of their main offensive figures, Vinícius Jr. However, his goal, which leveled the score at 2-2, was surrounded by controversy.
Initially disallowed after the referee ruled a handball by the Brazilian, VAR came into play shortly after. The referee reviewed the incident on the monitor and ended up validating the attacker's goal. What was initially seen as a handball was now considered a shoulder. Thus, a legal goal ensued, leading to jubilation in the Bernabéu and monumental frustration for Almería.
After the epic white comeback with Dani Carvajal's goal in the 99th minute, the next day, and amidst the uproar on social media regarding Vinicius' possible handball, the Brazilian decided to contribute his version to the debate in his own way.
A post on his social media account sufficed, where he simply shared a video of the specific play with a message that has sparked much discussion: "Golazo!!! This is how I always did it on Copacabana beach", wrote the Brazilian.
Vinícius was still involved in another controversy in the match against Almería. The Spanish program "El Golazo de Gol" brought to light images showing a possible elbow from the Brazilian to Almería's player, Alex Pozo, while trying to break free from his marker.
This incident occurred in the 86th minute, with the score tied at 2-2 and everything still to be decided. It was a play that could have influenced the course of the game if the referee had seen the action or if VAR had considered it aggression, in which case Vinicius could have been sent off.
