Messi was injured while chasing Luis Díaz and had to leave the Copa América final in tears due to a right ankle injury.
Already on the bench, the Argentine captain threw his boots and started crying, anticipating what could be his last participation in the Copa América.
In the first half, Messi had already raised alarms when, in the 35th minute, he suffered a blow in a clash with Colombian Santiago Arias.
When starting a run, Messi immediately noticed a problem with his ankle. He ended up on the ground, quickly felt pain, and raised his hand looking at the bench. The Albiceleste medical staff attended to him, but he could not continue.
The number 10 had already been close to retiring due to injury in the first half, after twisting his right ankle in a clash with Santiago Arias. On that occasion, he returned to the field limping slightly, with problems running and testing himself cautiously.
Shortly after, halftime arrived and in the restart, he returned to play before being injured definitively. Already on the bench, Messi, 37, put ice on his ankle.
The images of his damaged ankle went viral on social media. For their part, Argentina fans bid him farewell with shouts of hero, and "¡Messi, Messi!" was heard throughout the Hard Rock Stadium.
