CONMEBOL Refuses to Postpone Match After Death of Barcelona SC Goalkeeper
Barcelona SC's 20-year-old goalkeeper, Justin Cornejo, third in the team's lineup, passed away under unclear circumstances just hours after being admitted to a clinic in critical condition, the club from Guayaquil announced on Tuesday.
Cornejo had been training normally with his teammates on Monday, preparing for the match against Brazilian side Bragantino for a spot in the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16.
"No words or phrases can take away the pain we feel right now. The memories you leave behind will give us the strength we need to get through this. Justin, you will always be in our hearts. Rest in peace, friend. We love you very much," the club posted on their X account.
The club did not specify the cause of the young goalkeeper's death. Local journalists covering Barcelona's training reported that Cornejo suffered a severe fall in his bathroom, resulting in a serious head injury. Amid the situation, Barcelona requested the Copa Sudamericana match to be postponed due to the incident. However, CONMEBOL rejected the request due to timing and logistics issues.
