(VIDEO) Sudamericana 2024 Highlights: Internacional vs Rosario Central
Internacional managed a dramatic 1-1 draw against Rosario Central in the Playoffs of the Round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana, but it wasn't enough to force penalties and try to secure their place in the next round of the tournament. The Argentine club will face Fortaleza.
Agustín Sández opened the scoring for Rosario with a goal at 19 minutes into the match, and Alan Patrick equalized for the Brazilians upon returning from the interval.
The Argentine team only needed a draw away from home since they had won 1-0 at home last week in the first leg.
The power of the Argentines was felt for most of the match, with flashes of brilliance from Internacional, who managed to get hopeful after the equalizer.
The dominance with which the Colorado team entered the field faded with Sández's goal, which left the Brazilians uncoordinated until after the interval.
There, hope shone again for Inter with Patrick’s goal, who shot into the net after a header from the Ecuadorian Enner Valencia that the Argentine goalkeeper deflected towards the scorer.
From then on, the attempts by the Brazilians, which seemed to fade against an offensive Rosario, gained strength towards the end of the match.
In the last minutes of the game, however, the Porto Alegre team launched an attack, with attempts, although not very clear, from Bruno Gomes, Wesley, and Valencia.
The Argentine team, led by Miguel Angel Russo, secured a victory a week ago with a goal from Campaz. They drew 1-1 against Internacional: Sandez scored for the Canalla, who remain undefeated in CONMEBOL competitions in that city. They have played three knockout matches as visitors against Brazilian teams from Porto and have never lost: a 1-1 draw against Internacional in the 2024 and 2005 Sudamericana, and a 1-0 victory against Grêmio in the 2016 Libertadores.
Now, in the Round of 16, Rosario Central will face another Brazilian team. It is Fortaleza, who won the group they shared with another Argentine team, Boca Juniors. The first leg will be in Rosario and the return leg in Brazil.
