Luis "El Matador" Tejada, Panama's Soccer Legend, Has Passed Away
Luis "El Matador" Tejada, Panama's soccer legend, has passed away. The historic Panamanian goal-scorer and participant in the 2018 World Cup in Russia died on Sunday, January 28, at the age of 41, due to a heart attack while playing in a veterans' football league.
"It was a cardiac arrest. He asked to be substituted and left the game. Outside the field, he collapsed and was taken by ambulance to Santa Librada Polyclinic (on the outskirts of Panama City), where he was pronounced dead," confirmed a source close to the player to EFE while en route to the hospital.
"Matador," as the Panamanian player was known, remained active in the football world despite retiring professionally in 2019, like many former players. He was currently participating in a veterans' league for those over 40.
Tejada, who retired from the national team after the World Cup in May 2019, represented Panama in international football on 108 occasions and scored 43 goals.
Those 43 goals, alongside Blas Pérez, make him the top scorer for the Central American team.
He earned individual awards with the national team, such as being the top scorer in the Gold Cup (three goals) and the most valuable player in the tournament where Panama finished as the runner-up.
He was remembered for his bicycle kick against Mexico on March 30, 2005, in a World Cup qualifying match for Germany 2006. His most recent contribution to the Panamanian team was providing the assist to Román Torres on October 10, 2017, leading to the goal that secured qualification for Russia 2018.
