Viktor Gyökeres: The New Erling Haaland
Sporting's Swedish star, Viktor Gyökeres, who was Portugal's top scorer last season with 29 goals, has kicked off this season even better, already netting seven goals in just four matches. He’s currently tied as the top scorer in Europe’s major leagues alongside Norway’s Erling Haaland, who also has seven goals, but in three games.
Gyökeres was once again the key player in the fourth round of the Portuguese League, scoring the opener from the penalty spot in Sporting’s 2-0 win over Porto, which left Sporting at the top of the table.
The Nordic striker has scored in every league game so far, averaging 1.75 goals per match. Among Europe’s top leagues, only Haaland tops him, with an impressive average of 2.33 goals per game.
Portugal: A Goal-Scoring Factory
Another standout scorer from the fourth round of the Portuguese League was Brazil’s Marcos Leonardo, who saved a point for Benfica with a last-minute penalty against Moreirense (1-1). Leonardo joined the 'Eagles' last January from Santos and quickly earned a reputation as a super-sub, coming on late in games and finding the back of the net.
His goal in the fourth round was a parting gift, as he’s now headed to Saudi Arabia to play for Al Hilal, where he’ll join the likes of Neymar and João Cancelo. Another Brazilian off to a strong start this season is Sorriso, a young forward playing for Famalicão on loan from Brazil's Bragantino. The 23-year-old winger has already scored three goals in four matches.
Portugal has also been a breeding ground for two Spanish strikers: Abel Ruiz and Toni Martínez. Abel Ruiz, who honed his skills during five seasons at Braga, is now shining at Girona. Meanwhile, Toni Martínez, after stints with Famalicão and Porto, recently made the jump to Alavés, where he’s already bagged two goals in two games.
Another example of the Portuguese League’s knack for producing goal scorers is Uruguay’s Darwin Núñez, who made the leap to Liverpool after an outstanding goal-scoring run with Benfica.
