Top Coaches Reflect on Andrés Iniesta's Legacy: Guardiola, Luis Enrique, Van Gaal, and Del Bosque
Some of the coaches who have shaped Andrés Iniesta's career reflected on the footballer’s legacy. A must-watch.
Some of the coaches who have shaped Andrés Iniesta's career, such as Pep Guardiola, Louis van Gaal, Luis Enrique, and Vicente del Bosque, reflected on the legacy of the Spanish footballer in a video shared by Iniesta himself on the social network X. In the post, Iniesta teased a major announcement about his future, set for October 8, 2024.
The video, accompanied by the caption "The game continues" and the date of the announcement, shows a visibly emotional Iniesta struggling to hold back tears as he reflects on what football has meant to him.
The video transitions to clips from Iniesta’s early days in the youth academies of Albacete and Barcelona, followed by highlights from his peak years wearing the jerseys of Barça and the Spanish national team, alongside iconic newspaper covers.
Several of Iniesta’s key mentors also appeared in the video. Louis van Gaal, who gave Iniesta his Barcelona first-team debut at 18 years old in 2002, commented on the player’s unique qualities: "He wasn’t physically imposing, always slim, but football was always in his head," said the Dutch coach, noting Iniesta’s modest character as well.
Luis Enrique, who coached Iniesta at Barcelona between 2014 and 2017, emphasized the midfielder’s love for the game: "To me, he represents the feeling we had as kids, playing football in the streets until our mothers called us in when it was too dark to see the ball. That’s Andrés Iniesta, who, at 40, still wonders whether to keep playing."
Pep Guardiola, Iniesta’s manager during his golden era at Barça from 2008 to 2012, recounted a pivotal moment early in his coaching career when Iniesta reassured him: "We had one point out of six, almost in the relegation zone, and Andrés told me, ‘We’re on the right track, people are happy, and things will turn around.’ It gave me the energy I needed to keep going, and I’ll always be grateful for that."
Former Spain coach Vicente del Bosque highlighted the admiration Iniesta commands from fans, recalling a remarkable moment: "I remember Barcelona winning away at Espanyol, something like 4-1 or 5-1, and Iniesta left the pitch to a standing ovation. I think that perfectly sums up how much people love him."
The video closes with a heartfelt message from Iniesta’s father, José Antonio Iniesta: "I don’t think Andrés can ever truly leave football."
