The End of the Drama... Memphis Depay Will Stay with Corinthians
Corinthians has confirmed that they will maintain their partnership with the sports betting company Esporte da Sorte, as it was not included in the list of websites to be blocked in Brazil for failing to meet the Ministry of Finance's requirements.
In an official statement, the Brazilian club emphasized that they are "authorized to continue displaying Esportes da Sorte," whose logo appears on the front of the men's football jersey. The contract, worth 309 million reais (nearly $55 million), "is fully respected by both parties."
Esportes da Sorte is not on the list of 2,000 companies banned from operating nationally, which was released on Friday by Brazil's National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel). The betting company announced in a statement that it has met all imposed requirements and is still awaiting its license to continue operations throughout Brazil.
This week, it was revealed that the company, which covers a large portion of the contract with Dutch player Memphis Depay, Corinthians' main signing, could continue operating only in Rio de Janeiro thanks to support from a state lottery. This arrangement allowed Esportes da Sorte to remain featured on the jerseys of the eight clubs it sponsors in Brazil, including Corinthians, Athlético Paranaense, Grêmio, Bahia, and the Palmeiras women's team.
Some local media outlets have reported that Palmeiras has begun to remove the betting company's logo from their jerseys. However, the São Paulo club stated in a message to EFE that "the matter is being analyzed by the Legal Department."
On Friday, the Brazilian government began blocking sports betting sites that did not meet the Ministry of Finance's requirements. Companies that expressed interest in complying with the regulations will be allowed to continue operating until December. After this deadline, the Ministry will intensify the block, ensuring that starting in 2025, only operators fully compliant with the regulations remain active.
