The Decline of Joao Felix
Joao Félix's loan to Barcelona last summer offered him a chance to revive his career, but despite scoring 10 goals and providing 6 assists, the forward lost his starting position as the season progressed due to the inconsistency that has plagued him since his breakout at Benfica five years ago.
During the initial months in the Catalan capital, Joao Félix, who had already spent the second half of the previous season on loan at Chelsea, frequently stated that Barça's playing style suited his offensive characteristics better than Atlético Madrid's, the club he has belonged to since 2019.
The forward's debut was promising. In his first four matches as a Blaugrana, all victories, the Portuguese player scored a double and provided an assist against Antwerp (5-0), netted a goal against Betis (5-0), and delivered another assist against Celta (3-2).
However, Joao Félix's impact waned as the weeks went by. He went twelve games without scoring between September 19 and November 28, gradually losing his starting spot, which Xavi Hernández had initially given him, to Lamine Yamal, who proved to be more disruptive, and Raphinha, who was more committed defensively.
Félix was eligible to play in 46 of the 53 matches Barcelona played last season, as he had not yet signed for the first three and missed four due to injury. Overall, he participated in 44 matches, the highest number of his career, surpassing the 43 in his breakout year at Benfica (2018-2019).
However, according to 'Transfermarkt.es', the forward averaged 49 minutes per game, the lowest of his career, due to his diminished role in the latter half of the season. Out of the 24 matches he started, only seven came in 2024, and his role was minimal in the crucial games of the season.
