The Awkward Moment Between Ter Stegen and Nagelsmann
Julian Nagelsmann has admitted that a conversation he had with Germany’s goalkeeper Marc-André Ter Stegen in March was "not very pleasant" concerning Ter Stegen’s role as Manuel Neuer's backup in the national team.
In a press conference ahead of the Nations League clash against the Netherlands, Nagelsmann clarified that despite the discomfort of the meeting, where goalkeeper coach Andreas Kronenberg was also present, the goalkeeper "respected" the situation.
"Ter Stegen performed very well against Hungary; he is a crucial player for us, with a special responsibility, also as captain. His statements are completely understandable and legitimate. I was momentarily concerned that he might say, ‘I’m not going to participate,’ but he remained committed. I hope he stays healthy and plays well for us in the World Cup in two years," Nagelsmann elaborated.
Asked about the upcoming opponent in Amsterdam, Nagelsmann acknowledged that "the Netherlands has a very good team," with players who "have great potential" and "play in a very varied manner."
"Individually, they are better equipped than the Hungarians. They have a good mix of quality and physicality. I hope the stadium is full and we have a great atmosphere. It will undoubtedly be an exciting match, and we are looking forward to it," he said.
Regarding potential lineup changes, Nagelsmann indicated that they are not planning to "change everything," as there are "certainly aspects" they can "do similarly," but Tuesday’s opponent presents a different style of play.
"It’s possible that Pavlovic might start, but first, we will see the training and the final match. Then we will decide overnight," he commented.
In another note, the former Bayern Munich coach did not rule out the possibility of calling up players from the Saudi Arabian league, as he noted, "In the end, you have to give all leagues around the world a chance if you judge from a sporting perspective."
"For now, it is not a major league. Everyone has to decide for themselves. I can understand if you do not want to nominate someone," he concluded.
