Super Madrid Derby in Saudi Arabia: Real Madrid Stages a Comeback in a Thrilling Match Against Atlético in the Super Cup
Real Madrid, led by Carlo Ancelotti, made it to the final of the Spanish Super Cup after a thrilling 5-3 victory against Atlético Madrid in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The goals for the Merengues came from Antonio Rüdiger (20’), Ferland Mendy (29’), Dani Carvajal (85’) in regular time, and an own goal by Stefan Savić (116’) and Brahim (122’) in extra time. On the other hand, Atlético's goals were scored by Mario Hermoso (6’), Antoine Griezmann (37’), and an own goal by Rüdiger (78’).
The first goal of the match was netted by Spanish defender Mario Hermoso, who took advantage of a corner in the early minutes. However, the joy for 'Atleti' fans lasted only 15 minutes, as Antonio Rüdiger scored a goal at the 20th minute, reminiscent of Sergio Ramos' goal in the 2014 Champions League final.
Nine minutes after Rüdiger's goal (who later scored an own goal), Madrid's left-back, Ferland Mendy, scored. Griezmann leveled it at 2-2 in the 37th minute to end the first half on equal terms.
Madrid's German defender, Rüdiger, gave the temporary lead to Simeone's team by scoring an own goal after a mistake by the Spanish goalkeeper Kepa. However, Madrid's right-back, Daniel Carvajal, miraculously scored at the 85th minute, sending the derby into extra time.
Just when it seemed like the match would be decided in a penalty shootout, an own goal by Savić put Atlético on the ropes. The final blow came from the Spanish-Moroccan midfielder, Brahim Díaz, who surpassed Jan Oblak - who had left his goal to join the attack - to secure the final score of 5-3.
Thanks to this result, one of the most lopsided since 2007, Real Madrid advanced to the final of the Spanish Super Cup, where they will face the winner of the match between Barcelona and Osasuna, scheduled for January 11, 2024.
