Rabiot, Depay, Martial, Ramos... The Stars Without a Club After the Transfer Window Closes
He finally found a club! After being close to Real Sociedad during the summer transfer window, Matts Hummels has landed at AS Roma. Earlier this week, the Italian club officially announced the signing of the German defender, who was without a contract after leaving Borussia Dortmund. The runner-up in the last Champions League is one of the few free agents who has managed to find a new team.
Many others are still looking for a new opportunity, as the transfer market closed in most leagues on September 1. Among them are some big names in European football.
Adrien Rabiot
Starting with the French midfielder. After his strong performance at the Euro with Les Bleus, Adrien Rabiot finds himself without a team. Juventus chose not to renew his contract due to his high salary demands. The Bianconeri preferred to strengthen their midfield with several new players (Khéphren Thuram, Douglas Luiz, Teun Koopmeiners). Despite expectations that the former PSG player would have numerous offers, the French international has found himself without a club at the start of the season.
Several clubs made attempts to sign him, such as AC Milan, who eventually opted for Youssouf Fofana, as well as Manchester United and Liverpool. However, the salary demands of the player, who has 48 international appearances, have deterred potential suitors. Véronique Rabiot, who manages her son's career, may need to lower her expectations if she wants to secure a new team for him in the coming weeks.
Memphis Depay
A player of highs and lows. Memphis Depay is also without a club this September. The Dutchman hasn’t received many offers since his contract with Atlético Madrid ended. Only Nice and Rayo Vallecano have shown interest, but they aren't the level of clubs the Dutch international is expecting. His underwhelming performance at Euro 2024 did not reassure potential suitors. In the meantime, the 30-year-old striker is keeping himself in shape on his own.
Anthony Martial
Fragility personified. The French striker is too often injured. At Manchester United, Anthony Martial never managed to complete a full season without issues. The Red Devils, finally rid of his contract, chose not to renew it. Like Depay, he hasn’t received many offers. Recently, Lille made an attempt to sign him, and Flamengo in Brazil and AEK Athens in Greece have also expressed interest.
Wissam Ben Yedder
A prolific striker in Ligue 1 in recent years, Wissam Ben Yedder has been unable to relaunch his career after leaving AS Monaco. The French international is facing legal troubles, which has made many clubs reluctant to take a risk on him for now.
Sergio Ramos
After a successful return to Sevilla last season, Sergio Ramos is now a free agent. At 38 years old, the defender has no plans to retire. A move to MLS with San Diego has been mentioned, but the Real Madrid legend remains available on the market.
Joël Matip
Injured for most of the 2023-2024 season with Liverpool, Joël Matip left the Reds through the back door. Despite being a key player for Jürgen Klopp for many years, the Cameroonian central defender is now without a club. A return to the Bundesliga with a lower-tier team could be in the cards later in the season.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting
Another Cameroonian international looking for a team. Choupo-Moting was Bayern Munich’s go-to substitute. Now, at 35 years old, he’s seeking one final challenge. Serie A could be his next destination, with Inter Milan reportedly ready to offer him a short-term contract. Stay tuned.
Other notable free agents: Ivan Perisic, Yusuf Yazici, Dele Alli, Youcef Atal, Adam Ounas, Davy Klaassen, Andy Delort, Rafinha, Serge Aurier, Miralem Pjanic, M'Baye Niang, Rachid Ghezzal, Cédric Soares, Patrick van Aanholt, Ivan Cavaleiro.
