Pau Cubarsí Makes History as Spain's Youngest Debutant Defender
Pau Cubarsí, the 17-year-old Barcelona center-back, made history by becoming the youngest defender to debut for the Spanish national team in the defeat against Colombia in London. He admitted that he couldn't have imagined making his debut so early, even in his "wildest dreams."
The excitement of a historic debut, only second to his Barcelona teammate Lamine Yamal, is embodied by Pau Cubarsí. Xavi Hernández's trust in the young talent at Barcelona is mirrored by Luis de la Fuente in the Spanish national team. Given the first opportunity after his call-up, De la Fuente handed a debut to a player who has emerged as one of the brightest prospects in Spanish football in recent months.
"It has always been a dream to debut for the senior national team. Honestly, I've always dreamed of it, but I never imagined it would happen so early. However, it's the path I've always fought for, and I've given everything to be where I am," reflected Cubarsí during his media interactions with the Federation.
Cubarsí plans to keep the jersey from his first day with the national team and has clear intentions for it once he returns to Barcelona.
"I'm going to take it home, frame it, and hang it in my room so that every time I wake up, I see how proud I am," he confessed.
