Palmeiras And Corinthians Clash In Classic That Could Decide The Leader In Brazil
This Saturday’s Paulista derby between Palmeiras and Corinthians could be a turning point in the early stages of the 2025 Brasileirao. Both sides are among the seven clubs tied at the top of the table with four points, but only one can keep pace as the frontrunner.
Palmeiras in great form, but Corinthians holds the edge this season
Palmeiras, champions in 2022 and 2023, arrive at the derby riding a five-match unbeaten streak, including three straight wins. Their latest came midweek with a 1-0 triumph over Cerro Porteño in the Copa Libertadores. Despite the solid run, they now face a familiar obstacle.
So far in 2025, Corinthians has gotten the better of their historic rivals. In four matches this season, Corinthians has won two and drawn two against Palmeiras. That dominance helped Ramón Díaz’s side clinch the Campeonato Paulista title last month—also at the expense of Palmeiras.
Tensions are still high after the heated second leg of that state final, where Felipe Anderson nearly came to blows with Dutch star Memphis Depay, who led the Corinthians attack.
Memphis and Garro still questionable
As Corinthians prepare for the derby, they might be without two of their top attacking threats. Argentine striker Rodrigo Garro remains sidelined with an injury, and Memphis is recovering from an ankle issue. Neither has been confirmed for the starting lineup.
Meanwhile, Internacional, who lead the standings on goal difference, will visit fellow co-leader Fortaleza on Sunday in another crucial fixture. Internacional are coming off a dominant 3-0 victory over Atlético Nacional in the Copa Libertadores, with all three goals scored by Alan Patrick.
Fortaleza, on the other hand, will look to move past the traumatic events in Santiago. Their Libertadores match against Colo Colo was suspended after a pitch invasion and violent incidents outside the stadium left two people dead.
