Mourinho Suffers First Setback with Fenerbahce: Fails to Qualify for Champions League
José Mourinho experienced his first major disappointment as Fenerbahce's manager after failing to secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League. The Turkish side was eliminated by Lille in the third round of the qualifying playoffs.
In the second leg at Ülker Stadium, Fenerbahce initially looked set to turn the tie around, with an own goal by Bafode Diakite in the 90+1' minute, sending the match into extra time (following Lille's 1-0 win in the first leg).
However, Jonathan David sealed Lille's fate with a penalty in the 118th minute, ensuring the French side's progression to the next round, where they will continue their quest for a place in the 2024-2025 Champions League season.
As a result, Fenerbahce once again misses out on Europe's premier competition, forcing them to refocus their efforts on the Süper Lig.
