Mexico Wins Big but Fails to Convince Aguirre in His Return
Javier Aguirre, head coach of the Mexican national team, expressed disappointment despite Mexico's 3-0 victory over New Zealand in Pasadena, saying the win was not the result of a "great performance."
"Without playing a great game, the team kept running, fighting, with great attitude and effort. But I didn't like that we played backward at times. We could have been more aggressive, and defensively we were late," Aguirre told reporters after the match at the Rose Bowl.
"In the final third, we should have been more selfish. You can't let the ball hit the post. I told my players that if they score three, they should aim for six. We can't settle," added Aguirre, who began his third stint as Mexico's head coach with this match.
The former Atlético Madrid coach acknowledged that it was difficult to show great football after only four training sessions.
"Playing well was complicated not only due to the limited training time but also because of the heat today. The collective performance was inconsistent. There were good moments, but we lost our spark in the opponent's area. We need to always play forward," Aguirre concluded.
