Marcelo Gallardo's Return to River Plate in the Works
The Argentine football scene is abuzz with anticipation over the potential return of Marcelo Gallardo, the most successful coach in River Plate's history, to the club's helm. Speculations are rife that Gallardo could replace Martín Demichelis as the head coach of the "Millonarios."
What is certain is that "El Muñeco," who won fourteen titles in eight and a half years with River Plate, is currently in Buenos Aires. He recently attended the match between Independiente Rivadavia and Independiente de Avellaneda in Mendoza, part of the Liga Profesional de Fútbol.
From there, local media speculation has intensified, with reports of possible meetings between Gallardo and the club's president, Jorge Brito, to finalize the negotiations. Rumors also suggest that the announcement of his appointment could happen as soon as this Tuesday, potentially followed by his first training session.
However, some sources suggest that even if the contract is finalized, the reserve team coach, Marcelo Escudero, might lead the team in the upcoming match against Unión de Santa Fe on Sunday. This would allow Gallardo to debut in front of the home crowd in the subsequent game against Huracán.
The anticipation is particularly high among River Plate fans, who dream of a return to the glory days, especially in the Copa Libertadores. This year's final is set to take place in Buenos Aires, with the Estadio Monumental being a likely venue.
Since leaving River Plate, Gallardo, a former player for AS Monaco and PSG, has only managed Al-Ittihad.
River Plate announced on social media last Saturday that they had reached an agreement with Demichelis to terminate his contract, which was set to expire in December 2025. Demichelis was to lead his final match at home against Sarmiento de Junín on Sunday.
