Lozano: "It Would be Phenomenal to Stay in San Diego for The Rest of My Career"
Hirving "Chucky" Lozano was introduced as the new player for San Diego FC and expressed his delight with the ambitions of the Californian club's sports project, mentioning that "it would be phenomenal" to stay there for the rest of his career.
"It’s an important league. MLS is attracting the best in the world. For me, it’s a great opportunity to raise the level of the league," Lozano said in English during his press conference.
The Mexican, known for his goal that gave his country’s national team a surprising victory against Germany in their first match of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, has a four-year contract and envisions playing a leading role in San Diego in the long term: "It would be phenomenal to stay here for the rest of my career. Time will tell."
The press conference at Snapdragon Stadium garnered much attention, beginning with an emotional message from San Diego’s owner, Mohammed Al Mansour, which visibly moved Lozano.
"The treatment towards me and my family is the most important thing. For me, that’s key. I believe everyone here has shown a deep affection for me. This emotion is due to all the love they’ve shown me," the Mexican player declared.
"I loved the city, I loved the people. I received different proposals, but this one fulfilled me in every way. That was the most important thing," he emphasized.
San Diego announced last week the signing of "Chucky" Lozano as the club’s first designated player in its history. He will join the team in January 2025, when the Californian franchise debuts in MLS.
The team highlighted the Mexican’s international career and expects his signing to be a clear reflection of the club's ambitions.
"For the next six months, I will continue at PSV, and I will join in January. It wasn’t difficult to make this decision; this project and the affection shown were very important to me," Lozano said.
"They are making a great effort to bring me here. It’s a great responsibility, and I will always try to respond for the club, the fans, and the city," he added.
He also expressed his deep gratitude to coach Enrique Meza, with whom he has a strong bond and who accompanied him in this new project.
"Meza is like a father in football. He has always followed me, and we have a lot of communication. Every day he gives me different advice. I have a lot of affection for him. He always supported me from the beginning, and I have many beautiful memories with him," he concluded.
