Leonardo Bonucci Named Assistant Coach for Italy
Leonardo Bonucci, former Juventus player and Italian national team legend, was named the second coach of the Under-20 'Azzurri' team this Tuesday. "The former Italian defender, who was a European champion in 2021 and ranks fourth for most international caps, will serve as the assistant coach for the U-20 team," the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced in an official statement.
Bonucci, who retired at the end of last season after playing for Turkish club Fenerbahçe, will be the new assistant to Bernardo Corradi and will attend the upcoming U-20 World Cup, which will take place in Chile in September and October.
With 121 international appearances, Bonucci is only surpassed by Paolo Maldini (126), Fabio Cannavaro (136), and Gianluigi Buffon (176). He was part of the squad that won the European Championship in 2021, partnering with Giorgio Chiellini, with whom he previously formed the legendary BBC defense at Juventus alongside Andrea Barzagli.
"I am proud to accept the proposal from President Gravina and ready for this experience. It’s a time to observe, study, and learn. Thanks again to the president and the coach for this great opportunity," the former player stated. Throughout his career, he also spent a year with AC Milan, another at Union Berlin, and his last at Fenerbahçe.
