Javier Aguirre to Coach Mexico with Rafa Márquez as Assistant
It’s official: Javier Aguirre will be the new head coach of the Mexican National Team, following the dismissal of Jaime Lozano, who failed to lead Mexico past the group stage in the Copa América.
Rafa Márquez will join Aguirre’s coaching staff as an assistant, preparing for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The announcement was made by the Mexican Football Federation (FMF).
According to the FMF, the plan is for Márquez to take over as head coach after the 2026 World Cup and lead the Mexican team through the 2030 World Cup cycle. This news comes after Márquez left his position at Barça Athletic, the reserve team of FC Barcelona.
This will be Javier Aguirre's third World Cup campaign, having previously coached Mexico in 2002 and 2010, with the team being eliminated in the round of 16 on both occasions. Meanwhile, Rafa Márquez will be participating in his sixth World Cup, this time as a coach, after playing in five tournaments as a player (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018).
