Iker Muniain is on the verge of playing in Argentina!
Former Athletic Bilbao captain Iker Muniain is set to join Argentine club San Lorenzo. The Spanish midfielder is scheduled to arrive in Argentina to finalize the details of his transfer.
The 31-year-old, a two-time Spanish Super Cup winner (2015 and 2021) and a Copa del Rey champion (2024) with Athletic Bilbao, where he spent his entire career, will land at Ministro Pistarini International Airport in Ezeiza, Buenos Aires, tomorrow. His aim is to iron out the final details of the deal proposed by San Lorenzo last week.
If all goes as planned, the player will undergo a medical examination and sign a contract with the "Ciclón," fulfilling his long-held desire to play football in Argentina.
San Lorenzo coach Leandro Romagnoli confirmed that the club's president, Marcelo Moretti, had informed him of the advanced stage of negotiations. Romagnoli expressed his hope for a swift agreement to bring Muniain to Buenos Aires as soon as possible.
Muniain, who had previously visited Buenos Aires in late August to explore a potential move to River Plate, expressed his enthusiasm for Argentine football and the passion of its fans. However, River Plate's president, Jorge Brito, denied any serious negotiations with the player.
Argentina's current economic situation, characterized by high inflation and currency exchange controls, presents challenges for clubs to acquire international players. Nonetheless, San Lorenzo is determined to secure Muniain's signing.
