Honduras Responds After the Incident Involving Javier Aguirre
The incidents during the match between Honduras and Mexico at the Estadio Morazán continue to spark controversy. The Honduran Football Federation (FFH) issued an official statement condemning the aggression against Javier Aguirre, while also accusing the Mexican coach of allegedly inciting violence with provocative gestures toward the local fans.
The FFH expressed regret over the attack that left the Mexican coach with a head injury after being hit by a beer can. In its statement, the federation emphasized that these violent actions do not reflect the behavior of most Honduran supporters. However, they highlighted that Aguirre’s behavior during the match contributed to escalating tensions in the stands.
“We categorically reject the actions of a small group of fans but also point out that public figures like the Mexican coach have the responsibility to maintain respect. The obscene gestures and words he used are not only inappropriate but also incite violence,” the Honduran federation stated.
Meanwhile, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has already requested that Concacaf investigate the events and apply sanctions against those responsible for the attack on Aguirre. However, the FFH also called on the regional football governing body to take action against the Mexican coach’s behavior, asserting that rules should be applied fairly to prevent such situations from happening again.
Tensions remain high ahead of the second-leg match scheduled for next Tuesday in Toluca. Players like Jesús Gallardo have been singled out by Honduran media for making provocative gestures toward the fans, potentially adding pressure to an already heated confrontation.
Concacaf has yet to issue an official resolution, but sanctions are expected to be announced in the coming days. With this scenario, the return match will not only decide who advances in the Nations League but also test how authorities handle the growing challenges of maintaining discipline in regional football.
