France Stumble Against Canada Ahead of Euro 2024
One of the most lackluster performances by the French national team, coinciding with Kylian Mbappé's absence—who only played the last 15 minutes—ended their preparation for the Euro 2024 with a goalless draw against Canada in Bordeaux. This match marked France's final warm-up before heading to Germany for the Euro 2024 finals.
Even the late introduction of Mbappé, who was rested due to a right knee contusion from the previous match against Luxembourg, failed to ignite Didier Deschamps' squad in the closing stages.
The occasional brilliance of Ousmane Dembélé was the only thing that occasionally troubled the Canadian side, who had been humiliated days earlier by the Netherlands (4-0) in their previous friendly. However, Canada showed no signs of intimidation against the Euro favorites and even had chances to win the match, which could have inflicted greater damage on the European giants.
France, who had previously thrashed Luxembourg in a friendly in Metz (3-0), now travels to Germany without the expected consistency. They face Austria in Düsseldorf in eight days for their opening match of Euro 2024 in Group D, which also includes the Netherlands and Poland.
Canada, the first opponent for Argentina in the Copa América and who were previously routed by the Netherlands, put up a much-improved performance compared to their showing against the Dutch. They managed to hold their own against France, starting strong in the match before fading, yet managing to avoid defeat.
