Di María Still Undecided About his Future: Retirement or New Adventure?
Under contract with Benfica until June 30th, the Argentine winger has yet to decide when he will end his career.
Ángel Di María is determined to enjoy every last moment of his career. In an interview with the Clank YouTube channel, the 2022 World Cup champion opened up on various topics. He discussed, among other things, the tactics used by José Mourinho's Real Madrid to defeat Pep Guardiola's Barcelona in the early 2010s, but he also spoke about his future.
At 36, the Rosario native knows that the end of his career is approaching, but he wants to make it a memorable one, similar to his last "tango" with the Argentine national team last summer, which ended with the conquest of his second consecutive Copa América. "When I left the national team, I felt it was time to give the young players a chance. At 36... staying there would have been putting pressure on the younger players to be starters or to play. It was taking away their space, and I didn't want to do that," he confessed.
No plans to become a coach
Although he has hung up his sky-blue and white shirt, with the shield featuring three stars, Ángel Di María has not yet said goodbye to football. "I haven’t set a date for my retirement," he stated. However, he already has an idea of what his future may look like. The former Paris Saint-Germain player revealed that he wants to prioritize his family. "I know that being a coach is much harder, it takes more time. As a player, you train and then go home. A coach has to keep watching videos. If I retire, I want to enjoy my family more and spend more time with them," he explained.
In the meantime, Ángel Di María will focus on delivering a great second season with Benfica. A season he initially wanted to spend in Rosario, his hometown club, but gave up due to threats directed at him and his family in case of returning to Argentina. With his contract ending on June 30 and about to turn 37, the winger still keeps the flame alive.
