Brazil Appeals Marta's Red Card to Let Her Play in the Semifinals
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced that it will appeal the two-match suspension of their player Marta Vieira da Silva so she can participate in the semifinal match against Spain in the Olympic football tournament this Tuesday in Marseille.
Marta was suspended by FIFA's Disciplinary Committee for two matches following her expulsion in the first-phase match, also against Spain, held on August 31 in Bordeaux for kicking defender Olga Carmona in the head. The match ended in a 2-0 victory for Spain, and the CBF considers the suspension excessive.
Due to this suspension, Marta already missed the quarterfinal match that Brazil won against France (1-0) on Saturday.
Despite the efforts made by the CBF, FIFA's Disciplinary Committee decided on Friday that the action constituted a serious foul, thus warranting a two-match suspension. In their statement, the CBF emphasized that they will spare no effort to overturn the suspension imposed by FIFA.
"It should be noted that Marta has an impeccable history of respecting the rules of the sport and justice, being a global sports icon for several generations for everything she has achieved on and off the field," the CBF highlighted.
Brazil, placed in Group C with Spain, finished third with 3 points, behind Spain (9 points) and Japan (6 points), but advanced to the quarterfinals as the second-best third-place team.
After eliminating host France with an emotional Marta watching from the stands, she will have the opportunity to play another match, whether it's the final or the third-place match, if the suspension is not overturned.
Marta, who has won two silver medals (Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008) with Brazil, is making her sixth appearance in the Olympics at Paris 2024.
